After 8 March’2023, new guidelines are introduced in the UK by the GDC department. These guidelines are meant to benefit overseas dental therapists and dental hygienists.

GDC Registration New Guidelines for Dental Therapists and Hygienists

The new legislation is meant to be implemented immediately for the professionals who were unable to take the exam known as the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) because of the outbreak of Covid disease. Covid patients will be given more time to pass the test.

These changes also specify that only those with the required qualifications for dental hygienist or therapist can apply for registration in the appropriate category.

According to Stefan Czerniawski, GDC Executive Director’s words:

It will provide a more flexible framework that will allow professionals who have been certified in another country and are able to meet our high standards of secure and efficient treatment, to improve and modernize the procedure.

There will be new regulations regarding the ORE since the current procedure is ineffective and insufficient to handle the current high number of applicants.

Other introduced changes are:

  • Anyone with an international dental certificate that is related with the European diploma or specific to their own country must satisfy the dental council that is required in accordance to knowledge and abilities.
  • The professionals must take an examination to demonstrate their skills as a therapist or hygienist.
  • Diplomas awarded overseas must be a proof of the skills and knowledge of the candidate. No further investigation into the abilities and expertise of the applicant is necessary.
  • The diploma must be issued within the timeframe specified in the provisions of section 15(1)(c)(ii).
  • The requirement to state good health and good character must be approved by the licensing authority within the country. The application must be also certified by a licensed medical professional who has performed an assessment of health for the person who is applying in the last 12 months.
  • The five-year timeline is extended by a year for those who were successful in securing a spot on the test prior to the 2 April 2020 and had less than 3 months old at the time of the time left as of the time of this.
